I asked Jay Wren where the space for a 0-bit file is allocated. fo instance, when you touch a file, its size is 0 bits. Obviously the file name other information must be stored somewhere else. I will post with the answer later.

His answer to my question was read up on file systems. Thanks Jay!! real help.

However he did send me to this very interesting link
the 5000$ compression challenge:

First off, shout out to SSH and Putty, two extremely powerfull tools. To surf the internet without being detected by the internet police at your work you will need the following:

  • Home Linux machine running a SSH daemon.
  • putty
  • Need to be able to connect to your linux machine at home ( maybe through your work’s public internet proxy) while at work, through putty.
  • portable FireFox http://www.portableapps.com/
  • Home linux machine needs proxy configuration script.

First connect to your machine at home, if needed enter proxy:

proxy settings

Second, set up tunnel:

  • right click on upper left corner of putty window that is connected to your home box.
  • click “Change Settings…”
  • click Connection –> Tunnels
  • enter 1081 in Source port
  • enter localhost:80 in Destination
  • Click Add
  • Click Apply

tunnel settings

Third, setup FireFox to use the tunnel setup in step two:

  • double click PortableFireFox.exe
  • select Tools –> Options
  • click Connection Settings
  • Select Manual Proxy Configuration
  • In HTTP Proxy: enter localhost port 1081

FireFox Settings

Fourth, configure linux machine to forward traffic on localhost to public internet:

  • On Fedora Core 4,
    vi /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy.conf
  • Paste proxy.conf code contributed to me by lazy dawg everlast http://little.xmtp.net/

#turning ProxyRequests on and allowing proxying from all may allow
#spammers to use your proxy to send email.

    ProxyRequests On

    Order deny,allow
    Deny from all
    #Allow from .your_domain.com
    Allow from 127.0.0.1

All done! Now you can go to anysite with out your boss’s knowlege!! it is all encrypted surfing too!  not much time was spent on this, so yeah……

Soccer:
I scored 4 goals last night in our last game of the indoor session.  I was happy to end on a note like that.  I scored 6 goals all season long.  We start outdoor today and we are supposed to have a pretty good squad.

Life:
I am getting really excited about our new condo.  We checked it out over the weekend and they are making good progress.  All the doors and molding is up.  everything is painted.  shouldn’t be to much longer.
Chrisitna graduates from Eastern her masters in PSY Sunday. I’m very proud of her, she has worked hard. Our families are going to the Gandy Dancer in AA afterward to celebrate. She also started working as a finacial counselor at Greenpath Financial last week.  They are putting her through a 3-week fully paid training program. She says its boring as all hell, but she is learning about money.

I took the FE exam last Saturday.  It was hard. There was a lot of material that I have never seen before.  I would have done better if i would have taken it two years ago when the material was fresh. I will know in 10-12 weeks though.

Tech:
I’ll write more on this later… I am tired of this post already. I am able to stream my recorded programs from mythtv over the internet now. Last Thurday i watched an ultimate fighting show that i recorded.  I also watched South Park at work too.  It works suprisingly well.

Yesterdays warm weather!!!
Time to stock up on Zima, Smirnoff Ice Wild Grape, and Boones Farm.
Those tasty Malt beverages are all delicious on a hot summer day poured over a tall glass of Ice - is simply refreshing.

Re: MythTV.
The Card I have is the Hauppauge PVR-150. It is a great card but does not have video out.  I have S-Vid out on my Radeon 7000 video card, but that is el cheapo, and requires additional configuration in Linux to work properly.  I jumped past both of these problems by purchasing a scan converter which I will promptly return once I order my Hauppauge PVR-350, which has video out.

Re: Life
Christina started her job search in overdrive and had 3 interviews after one week of looking.  She already accepted an offer and starts April 17th.  She was accepted to a PhD. Program but is considering a different career route.  She will graduate with her masters in 2 weeks. Meanwhile, I continue to shape and mold the perfect butt grove in our couch!

Re: Condo.
We bought a condo in Van Buren Township!  Imagine that… VBBoy in Van Buren.  It is brand new construction and we get to pick everything. We got some money maple cabinets and a sweet gas fireplace.  Has wooden floors, 1700sq ft., it is sweet pad.

I am severly out of shape. Played a game last night at ten, and right now it hurts to take a deep breath. My legs are soo damn sore. I wish i could trade them in for a fresh pair.  We won 13-9, but we would have kept them to about 3 had we all not been so out of shape.  At one point we were ahead 5-1 and some little mexican tried to tell us we only had four. Dave replied, “maybe in mexico” some of thier squad didn’t like that to much, but it blew over when he started talking to the guy in spanish. All I could hear was “cinco cinco quatro quatro quatro…” Our squad couldn’t stop laughing. Funny stuff.

Ok, long time since last post… A lot going on. I got a call from Brother Briggs Andy the other day about a soccer team. I’ll always be a loyal VBBoy but I am now a ‘Cookie Monster’. Not exactly sure about the name, but we are a bunch of rag-tag, out of shape 20-somethings. But believe you me, with D Koontz as our keep, I’m sure we will hold our own. We are back up in Wixom, same place Dan Steinert heaved a helmet at a referee, and the same place the you could her Merrick yell, “BACK OFF BASOU”.

This gosh darn FE exam is proving to kick my ass. Its hard to explain, but i am familiar with all the problems, however I need to look at the solution before I fully understand WTF is going on. After looking at the spoiler I feel like I should have know how to figure it out…. I have Two top notch resources and am hoping while shooting through the second, I will not need to refrence the solution so much. However, re-learning all this jazz is really cool.

So for reasons I wont get into, I signed up for the FE. This is the second step in the process to become a licensed engineer via the state of Michigan. http://www.ncees.org/licensure/licensure_for_engineers/

Basically I have two months to refresh/learn some serious, crazy, complex mind blowing doo doo.
For just a slight idea of what I have instore for myself, take a glance at this: http://www.ncees.org/exams/fundamentals/fe_exam_specs.pdf

I have set up a rigourous schedule of studying which is going to wear me the F out over the next two months… This 8 hour test aint no joke, or is it to be taken lightly.  If I pass it will open many doors for my future, if I fail…. hmmm… If I fail, I’ll dust myself off and try again, try again.

Obvioulsy this means that my projects will be slowed down, or be placed on slight hold. One thing that I did acomplish last weekend was an installation of MythBurn on FC4. There was not a lot of documentation on how to do this, so I will maybe make a how-to in the near future to address some of the dependencies. Specifically, projectX and Sun’s JRE.

MythTV is great. I used two great resources for getting it running.
YUM:http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html
MythTV:http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php

I did have two problems. The first was that I didn’t have all the public keys installed. Make sure that you yum -install all-GPG-keys or yum will exit.
Second problem was with MythWeb. Fedora Core 4 comes with SELinux. SElinux is a security measure, and it prevents mythweb from opening a socket to the mythbackend. To fix this problem you need to disable selinux:

vi /etc/selinux/config
SELINUX=disabled

Then reboot the machine and you will be able to access mythweb
